Cocoa Beach bills itself as the closest beach to Orlando (a distance of around 60 miles). Birthplace of famed surfing legend Kelly Slater and well-marketed along Florida’s I-95 corridor through the billboards of the iconic Ron Jon Surf Shop, Cocoa Beach is perhaps the foremost “surf town” of America’s East Coast. The tourism anchor of Florida’s Space Coast region, Cocoa Beach is also close enough to the Kennedy Space Center that launch pads are actually visible from the beach itself, making the town a prime spot for watching rocket launches. The Cocoa Beach Pier offers a couple of restaurants with great over-the-ocean views, and nearby Jetty Park has a separate pier along the jetties right next to where cruise ships arrive and depart Port Canaveral. Though it is a little touristy, especially around Ron Jon Sur Shop, Cocoa Beach is not even close to being as overbuilt as Daytona Beach is farther to the north. Instead, Cocoa Beach has managed to retain its authentic small beach town feel, which helps to make it perhaps the best place to spend the afternoon along Central Florida’s Atlantic coast.
