Located a little over an hour’s drive north of Jacksonville, St. Simons Island, pop. 14,500+ (Wikipedia), is one of Georgia’s “Golden Isles.” A beautiful, idyllic seaside getaway separated from the mainland port town of Brunswick by a wide expanse of golden or bright green wetlands (depending on the season), St. Simons is refreshingly not over-commercialized but instead shrouded in majestic oak trees. The town’s focal point is a quaint historic village that spills out into a wonderfully planned waterfront featuring a lighthouse, pier, park lands, and beaches that eventually wrap around to the east and north along St. Simons Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.
